Semitropical rainforest prevails in the Ryukyu and Bonin archipelagoes and contains various kinds of mulberries. Professor CS Sargent (Forest Flora of Japan) describes it as Zelkova Keaki, and says: " The wood is more esteemed by the Japanese than that of any of their other trees.

The first meaning refers to all plant life in an area or time period (especially the naturally occurring or indigenous plant life). The corresponding term for animal life is fauna.

The second meaning refers to a book or other work which describes the plant species in an area or time period, with the aim of allowing identification.The book describes and illustrates a total of 35 species surveyed, and 20 are new species that were collected from the southwestern region of Japan focusing on the Nansei Islands and Kyushu region.
